tataḥ samekhale vīrau

saḿyuktāv itaretaram

jaghnatur vajra-kalpābhyāḿ

gadābhyāḿ raṇa-durmadau

SYNONYMS

tataḥ — then; samekhale — on the level fighting grounds; vīrau — the two heroes; saḿyuktau — engaged; itara-itaram — each other; jaghnatuḥ — struck; vajra-kalpābhyām — like lightning bolts; gadābhyām — with their clubs; raṇa — by the fight; durmadau — driven to a mad fury.

TRANSLATION

The two heroes thus began battling each other on the level fighting grounds outside the city. Maddened with the fury of combat, they struck each other with their lightning-bolt-like clubs.
